Welcome To Sports Therapy 2 Fitness Here In Preston.

What is MET Stretching?

MET (Muscle Energy Technique) stretching is a form of manual therapy that uses the patient’s active muscle contractions to improve flexibility, mobility, and range of motion. It is a gentle yet effective technique where the therapist guides the patient through specific movements, often in combination with resisted contractions and passive stretching.

This technique is widely used in sports massage, physical therapy, and rehabilitation to treat muscle tightness, joint dysfunction, and postural imbalances.

How MET Stretching Works

  1. Isometric Contraction: The individual contracts a specific muscle or muscle group against the resistance provided by the therapist.

  2. Relaxation Phase: Following the contraction, the muscle is allowed to relax completely.

  3. Passive Stretch: The therapist gently stretches the muscle further, taking advantage of the muscle’s temporary increase in flexibility (post-isometric relaxation).

This cycle may be repeated several times to achieve optimal results.

Benefits of MET Stretching

Improved Flexibility Increases the length of tight muscles and enhances joint range of motion.

Relief from Muscle Tightness:

Helps release tension in overactive or shortened muscles, promoting relaxation.
Enhanced Muscle Function:

Improves coordination and strength by resetting muscle imbalances.
Pain Reduction:

Alleviates pain caused by muscle tension, joint stiffness, or imbalances.
Better Postural Alignment:

Corrects postural deviations by addressing muscle tightness or weakness.
Non-Invasive Technique:

Gentle and safe, making it suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those recovering from injuries.
Faster Recovery:

Accelerates recovery from injuries by improving circulation and reducing muscle stiffness.
Prevention of Injuries:

Enhances muscle elasticity and joint stability, reducing the risk of future injuries.
Personalized Approach:

Can be tailored to the specific needs of the individual based on their condition, activity level, or goals.

MET stretching is particularly beneficial for athletes, individuals recovering from injuries, or those experiencing chronic pain or limited mobility. It’s often used in conjunction with other therapies, such as sports massage, strengthening exercises, or postural re-education, to provide a comprehensive approach to physical well-being.
